As I sit down to write this, you’re busy running around the house, chasing after your auntie with one sock on and the other mysteriously missing. Typical Jahzara energy, chaotic, unstoppable, and absolutely adorable. Today, you turn three. Three! How did we get here so fast?
You’ve brought so much light into our lives, baby girl. From the moment you arrived, it’s been a whirlwind of laughter, surprises, and the occasional “Jahzara, climb down!” And let’s not even talk about the number of times I’ve found you trying to eat a spoonful of sugar for the hundredth time.
Let me tell you, being your mama has been a full-time adventure. You’ve already perfected the art of charm. When you flash those big, innocent eyes and say, “Mama, si you give me just one sweet,” somehow I’m handing you three without even realizing it. You’re a pro negotiator. I’m convinced you’ll be leading peace talks one day, between nations, not just who gets the last chapati in this house.
At two, you’ve shown us just how full of life you are. You’re the kid who insists on wearing gumboots even when the sun is blazing, just because they are pretty and you want to. You’re the one who’ll throw a tantrum at the market and loudly declare, “This is what I want!” leaving us all embarrassed but amused.
Your grandma and I have had to up our game since you entered the scene. She wakes up early, prepare breakfast, and I to brace myself for the whirlwind that is you. But it’s the best kind of whirlwind, Jahzara. Your laughter fills this house in a way that makes even the longest days feel shorter.
Here’s something I’ve noticed about you, my sweet girl: you’re fearless. You’ve fallen off chairs and climbed right back up. You’ve made friends with kids twice your age, you command authority fearlessly, and you’re not afraid to yell “hello!” to people as they pass by. You’re kind too. You love sharing your snacks, even the ones you like the most, and you’ll happily “help” with chores, even if it means scattering clean clothes all over again.
As you grow, life won’t always be easy, my love. Sometimes it’ll feel like the rain caught you without your umbrella (or your favorite gumboots). But I want you to remember that you’re strong, smart, and so deeply loved. You’ve got a whole family rooting for you, from me to grandma to your uncle and aunties, and even your papa. We’re all here for you, always.
This year, I want you to keep shining in your unique Jahzara way. Dance even when there’s no music, keep asking “why” even when the answers are boring, and never stop being the happy, curious girl who brightens every room she walks into.
I promise to be here for all your milestones, your first bike ride, first day of school... ,your first heartbreak (hopefully not for a while), and everything in between. You’re my pride and joy, Jahzara. No matter how old you get, you’ll always be my baby.
So here’s to three years of Jahzara magic and a lifetime of more. You’re going to conquer the world someday, I just know it. Until then, I’ll be right here, cheering you on and making sure you’ve got clean gumboots to wear, just in case.
With all my love,
Mama
